What Is SCA Certification? A Guide for Dubai Baristas

Walk into almost any specialty café in Dubai and ask the head barista how they trained, and you will often hear three letters: SCA. SCA certification has become the most recognised coffee qualification in the UAE, and for good reason. It gives baristas, café owners and passionate home brewers a shared, international standard for what good coffee looks and tastes like.

In this guide, we explain what SCA certification is, how the Coffee Skills Program works, and how to choose the right course for where you are in your coffee journey.

What is the Specialty Coffee Association?

The Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) is a global, non-profit membership organisation representing thousands of coffee professionals, from farmers and green coffee buyers to roasters and baristas. It sets many of the standards the specialty industry works to, including how coffee is graded, cupped and brewed.

The SCA also runs the world's best-known coffee education system. Its courses are delivered by Authorized SCA Trainers (ASTs) in training centres around the world, including several in the UAE. Wherever you take a course, the curriculum and exams follow the same global standard, which is why an SCA certificate earned in Dubai is recognised in London, Melbourne or Seoul.

The SCA Coffee Skills Program explained

The Coffee Skills Program is the SCA's core education pathway. It starts with a short introductory course and then branches into five specialist modules:

Module What you learn Best for
Introduction to Coffee Coffee's journey from seed to cup, origins, processing and tasting basics Complete beginners
Barista Skills Espresso extraction, milk texturing, workflow, hygiene and customer service Café baristas and home espresso lovers
Brewing Filter methods, brew ratios, extraction and water Filter coffee fans and brew bar staff
Sensory Skills Tasting, aroma identification and cupping Anyone who wants to taste coffee more precisely
Roasting Roast profiles, roast development and roastery operations Aspiring and working roasters
Green Coffee Grading, buying, storing and evaluating unroasted coffee Buyers, importers and roastery managers

Introduction to Coffee is a single half-day course. The other five modules each have three levels.

Foundation, Intermediate and Professional levels

  • Foundation (about one day): the essential theory and hands-on skills. No experience needed.
  • Intermediate (about two days): deeper knowledge for people already working with coffee, with more demanding practical tasks.
  • Professional (about three days): advanced skills for experienced professionals, trainers and managers.

You can build your learning at your own pace, one module and level at a time. Completing a set combination of certificates can lead to an SCA Coffee Skills Diploma, a respected milestone in a coffee career.

What happens on a course day?

Every SCA course mixes theory with hands-on practice. On a Barista Skills Foundation day, for example, you might start with how espresso extraction works, then spend most of the day at the machine dialling in shots, steaming milk and building a smooth workflow.

At the end of each course there are two assessments:

  1. A written exam that checks your understanding of the theory.
  2. A practical exam in which you show the skills in front of your trainer.

Pass both and your certificate is issued by the SCA and recorded in its global education system.

Who should take an SCA course?

  • New baristas who want a recognised qualification to start their career in the UAE's growing café scene.
  • Experienced baristas ready to move into head barista, trainer or roaster roles.
  • Café and restaurant owners who want consistent standards across their team.
  • Home baristas who have invested in a good espresso machine and want to get the most from it.
  • Hospitality teams in hotels, airlines and offices that serve specialty coffee to guests.

How to choose the right SCA course in Dubai

Ask these questions before you book:

  • Is the trainer an Authorized SCA Trainer? Only ASTs can deliver official SCA courses and exams.
  • How big is the class? Smaller groups mean more time on the machine.
  • What equipment will you train on? Look for commercial-grade espresso machines and grinders.
  • What coffee is used? Training with freshly roasted specialty coffee makes a real difference to what you learn.
  • Is the exam fee included? Some prices exclude SCA certificate fees.
